UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) – Complete Guide
Welcome to UPSC Preparation
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is India’s premier constitutional body responsible for conducting recruitment examinations for various Group A and Group B Central Government services. Every year, lakhs of aspirants compete in the Civil Services Examination (CSE), one of the most prestigious and challenging exams in the country.
Through UPSC, candidates can become IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and officers in many other central services.
What is UPSC?
The Union Public Service Commission was established on 1 October 1926 and functions under Article 315 of the Constitution of India.
UPSC conducts examinations for recruitment into:
- Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
- Indian Police Service (IPS)
- Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
- Indian Revenue Service (IRS)
- Indian Audit & Accounts Service (IAAS)
- Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS)
- Indian Information Service (IIS)
- Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS)
- Indian Postal Service (IPoS)
- Indian Corporate Law Service (ICLS)
- And many other Central Government services.
UPSC Civil Services Examination Stages
The Civil Services Examination consists of three stages.
Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination is the first screening stage.

- General Studies Paper-I
- CSAT (General Studies Paper-II)
Total Marks
- GS Paper-I – 200 Marks
- CSAT – 200 Marks (Qualifying)
Duration
- 2 Hours each paper
Question Type
- Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
Negative Marking
- 1/3 mark deducted for every wrong answer.
Only marks obtained in GS Paper-I are considered for qualifying to the Main Examination.
Stage 2 – Main Examination
Candidates who qualify the Preliminary Examination appear for the Mains.
The Mains examination consists of 9 papers.

Eligibility Criteria
Nationality
- IAS and IPS – Indian Citizen
- Other services – As per UPSC notification.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university.
Students in the final year may also apply, subject to meeting the notification requirements.
